RPO or RTO – what’s the difference?
With backup & disaster recovery strategies, there are two basic parameters that are used to define the objectives for data backup and recovery. A distinction is made here between RPO and RTO.
Recovery Point Objective (RPO) focuses on the amount of data that can be lost over a certain period of time – from the occurrence of a critical event to the backup – until the loss leads to serious damage.
RPO is therefore crucial for the development of an effective backup strategy, which can be adapted, for example, by setting the right intervals for data backups.
Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is about the tolerable time span for the failure of an application, a process and/or a system. The RTO also specifies the time in which the recovery should take place.
In this case, it is therefore about the foundations of a disaster recovery strategy that encompasses not just the data, but the entire IT landscape.
